The economy of God is a funny thing. If you are in the stock market and invest in Apple, your return, if there is one, is right there in Apple. But in the Kingdom of God, the return on your investment often ends up in areas you least expect. And so do your losses.
For instance, God speaks to you concerning giving. You face your fears, expose your heart to God and step out in faith. You give. A week later, God reveals the next steps for you to take in recovering emotional intimacy with your wife.
Proverbs instructs us to “trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all your ways, and He will direct your path.”
The reason we must rely completely on trusting God is that our understanding can get us absolutely nowhere.
God’s footsteps are invisible. They defy both logic and reason. You have no more chance of connecting the dots than a dog has of discovering the foundations of quantum mechanics.
Everything that happens to you is in the hand of a God who causes all things to work together for your good. Yahweh is the God who visits each and every sparrow at the moment of its death. It has been said, “Either everything is a miracle or nothing is a miracle.”
The countless events that make up your life are each placed there by the LORD; every event in its exact place, at precisely the right time by the creator of space and time.
So the next time you are at a truck stop, take a look at the quarter game machine. Along a bottom shelf will be
dozens of quarters, many of them precariously suspended in the air, ready to fall at the slightest nudge. As a player drops a single quarter into the machine, it falls behind the mass of quarters. A plate then moves forward, pushing your quarter into the mass. Throughout the mass, quarters move Imperceptibly forward. If you are lucky, some of the quarters at the front will be pushed so far over the edge they will fall off and be spit out as your reward. You can never know for sure which ones will fall, no matter how hard you try, no matter where you drop your quarter. Your prize is as likely to come from the left side of the machine as it is from the right.
The next time God’s Spirit prompts you to act, go ahead. Drop your quarter in and see what comes out.
